We base our teaching materials on our analysis of student and practitioner writing, addressing student writing weaknesses that are likely to have the greatest negative impact in the workplace. We are producing three main types of materials: Genre-based Units, which teach students the basic content, sequencing and formatting for certain civil engineering genres; Language Units, which address how to make effective vocabulary and grammar choices for civil engineering writing; and Grammar and Mechanics Lessons, which review standard written English and address the most common errors made by students in civil engineering papers. The materials are suitable for courses or self-study. They include everything from very basic tips appropriate for a first-year Introduction to Civil Engineering course, to units that are especially appropriate for lab reports, to units with more focus on practitoner-like choices in design reports and tech memos for clients.
